A List of All the Different Types of Coffee Drinks and Flavours in Australia Explained

4 Mins read

Welcome to our different types of coffee list Australia

There are many different types of ground coffee available to buy in Australia, all of which are arguably delicious. However, with so many different coffee types available in Australia, it can be difficult to settle on the very best. In this blog, we are going to take you through a grand variety of coffee and the various flavour and drinking styles that are available in our Australian coffee list. From different types of coffee names to the various beans, you’ll find everything you need to know about coffee in Australia right here.

Different types of coffee beans list

Of the many different types of coffee available to buy in Australia, there are four primary varieties of coffee bean that we will take you through in this article: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa. What differentiates these coffee varieties from one another?

Arabica coffee beans

Arabica is arguably the most common (and heavily marketed) coffee bean in the world. This is typical because the coffee tends to be sweeter, with a more delicate flavour, with less acidity. Arabica beans are farmed in elevated areas, way above sea level, particularly in areas that get plenty of rain. Brazil in fact, is one of the largest exporters of Arabica in the world, including Ethiopia, of which coffee exportation accounts for 37% of their total export revenue.

Arabica coffee tends to lose its flavour when served either cold or when blended with milk. So, if you want to get the best out of these beans, you are better off drinking it hot, black or as an espresso.

Robusta coffee beans

Robusta comes up second in terms of global production, and is one of the most common types of coffee in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. As the name implies, Robusta coffee is well known for being strong and often harsh in flavour. Robusta has significantly higher levels of caffeine, making the plan far more resilient than its sister species of Arabica. This is largely because the additional caffeine acts as a natural insect repellent.

Robusta coffee isn’t the most popular bean among coffee lovers given its burnt and rubbery taste. However, for those who are big lovers of strong coffee, you cannot get any better than Robusta!

Liberica coffee beans

Liberica coffee beans are among the rarest coffee beans in the world. These are best grown in very specific climates, making production scarce and difficult to scale. That said, when you do get your hands on Liberica coffee, you will be in for an absolute treat. They have an aromatic flavour best described as an amalgamation of fruity and woody tastes.

Excelsa coffee beans

Excelsa is a member of the Liberica family, however, it is typically grown in Southeast Asia and represents a very small fraction of the world’s global coffee production. Excelsa has a wonderful fruity tart flavour and boasts attributes of both light and dark roast coffees giving it a truly unique profile that is highly sought-out by coffee enthusiasts all over.

A list of different types of coffee flavours

There are countless different types of coffee flavours in Australia, especially given the many additives that you can include (e.g., caramel and chocolate). However, here is a list of the 10 most popular that you can try:

  • Espresso: As mentioned above, the espresso is a small shot of coffee. This flavour type has a delicious, strong-tasting, and bitter profile
  • Macchiato: The macchiato is similar to the espresso, only with a dollop of foamed milk to lighten the strength of the espresso shot
  • Americano (long black): An Americano is hot water with a shot of espresso over the top. This is a long drink that tends to be quite strong, though diluted from your typical espresso flavours
  • Ristretto: A Ristretto is an espresso, only extracted with half the amount of water. This gives a much more condensed and fruity flavour
  • Flat white: A flat white coffee is an espresso shot mixed with steamed milk. This gives a creamier flavour combined with the robust espresso taste
  • Café latte: The café latte is the most customisable of the coffee beverages. For example, some people like to add a shot of vanilla, or caramel to their lattes for additional flavouring, so there are many types of coffee latte. A latte is a long drink with steamed milk and micro foam for a delicious creamy texture and flavour profile
  • Piccolo latte: Think of a Piccolo as a condensed latte
  • Irish coffee: A personal favourite, the Irish coffee combines sugar, cream, and a shot of Irish whiskey to give a truly unique and delicious flavour profile
  • Cold brew: A cold brew is not to be confused with an iced coffee. The requires medium coffee grounds and is never exposed to heat. Brewing takes 12-18 hours at room temperature or in the fridge, taking time to extract flavour, rather than heat.
  • Iced coffee: Iced coffee tastes a hot shot of espresso, poured over ice. There are many different types of iced coffees, such as an iced latte or Mocha
