What are the common causes of a dripping tap?

Taps are there to control the flow of water into your home. They work to stop water coming out, to control how fast it comes out when you want it to. And they are supposed to stop that water again when you have what you need. If your tap is dripping, it is not working as it should. There can be many reasons for this, including:

  • A faulty tap washer – your washer could have become worn, failing to properly seal so that your tap fully closes and stops all water from coming through.
  • Too high water pressure – it could be that you have unusually high water pressure. Your tap may need replacing for one better equipped to deal with this increased pressure, or you may require a plumber to lower your water pressure for you if possible.
  • A worn-out cartridge – much like a washer, your tap may have a worn-out cartridge that needs to be replaced. You may wish to switch to a ceramic cartridge, which can be better than a plastic one, but only if it is compatible with your tap.
  • A damaged tap seat – often, your tap seat can be the cause of a dripping tap. Limescale and other debris can build up, preventing it from sealing properly when you turn it off.

Out of all of these reasons, by far the most common cause of a drippy tap is a faulty tap washer. Whatever the reason for your dripping tap, don’t lose any more sleep over it. Call the best local plumbing services to come and fix your tap without delay, and without any more hassle for you.
